Privacy Policy for LORAN

Overview
LORAN is an English-speaking practice app that provides guided speaking practice, real-life conversation exercises, speech transcription, language feedback, and audio playback.
This Privacy Policy explains what information LORAN processes, why it is processed, and the services used to provide these features.
Microphone access and voice recordings
LORAN requests access to your device microphone when you use speaking features.
When you record a spoken response, the audio leaves your device so it can be processed for speech transcription. Spoken audio may be sent through the LORAN backend to OpenAI for speech-to-text processing.
LORAN does not intentionally store learner voice recordings in its normal application database or Cloudflare R2 transcription flow. Audio is nevertheless transmitted off your device so that your speech can be processed.
Speech transcription and conversation content
LORAN uses OpenAI speech transcription services to convert your recorded speech into text. The resulting transcript is returned to the app and used to continue the speaking exercise or conversation.
During AI conversation and language-feedback features, LORAN sends the text needed for the current interaction to the LORAN backend. This may include your transcribed speech, conversation messages, target expressions, scenario information, and other text required to provide corrections or feedback.
The backend sends the necessary content to OpenAI to generate conversation replies, corrections, and other language-learning feedback.
LORAN does not currently provide an end-user account system or maintain an account-based database of complete learner conversation histories.
Text-to-speech and audio playback
LORAN uses prerecorded and generated audio to provide spoken scenario content and AI-generated responses.
OpenAI is used to generate text-to-speech audio when needed. Some generated text and its corresponding audio may be cached on LORAN's backend so that the same audio can be reused instead of generated again.
Cached audio objects may be stored using Cloudflare R2, and related cache and audio metadata may be stored in LORAN's backend database.
Information stored on your device
LORAN may store information locally on your device that is necessary to operate the app, including:
- App and voice preferences
- Random installation and session identifiers
- Cached audio used for playback
- Temporary local recording files used during speaking practice
- Technical settings used by the app
Some local data can be removed by clearing the app's data or uninstalling LORAN.
Technical and diagnostic information
LORAN collects limited anonymous or pseudonymous product-usage and technical diagnostic information to operate, troubleshoot, secure, and improve the service.
This may include app version and build, platform, device model, operating-system version, scenario identifiers, event types, timing information, turn counts, setting states, and sanitized error information.
LORAN may use a randomly generated installation identifier and session identifier for reliability and usage statistics. These identifiers are not derived from device hardware or an account.
LORAN does not use production telemetry to store learner audio, speech transcripts, conversation content, prompts, precise location, contacts, or hardware identifiers.
Data storage and retention
LORAN stores information needed to operate its scenarios, releases, generated text-to-speech audio, cache metadata, and limited technical telemetry.
LORAN does not currently specify a fixed retention period for all technical, cached, or processed data. Information may be retained as reasonably necessary to operate, maintain, troubleshoot, and secure the service.
Because some processing is performed by third-party service providers, their handling and retention of data may also be governed by their applicable policies and service terms.
Third-party service providers
LORAN relies on third-party services to provide parts of its functionality. These currently include:
- OpenAI, for speech transcription, AI-generated conversation replies, language corrections and feedback, and text-to-speech
- Cloudflare R2, for storage and delivery of certain audio assets
Information necessary to provide these features may be transmitted to and processed by these service providers.
Accounts, advertising, and payments
The current version of LORAN does not require users to create an account or sign in to use its speaking features.
LORAN does not currently display third-party advertising.
The current version does not provide active in-app payment or subscription processing.
Your choices
You can choose whether to grant LORAN microphone permission. If microphone permission is not granted, voice-based speaking features will not work.
You can revoke microphone permission through your device settings, clear locally stored app data, or uninstall the app at any time.
Removing the app from your device does not necessarily remove technical or cached information that has already been processed or stored by backend or third-party services.
Data deletion requests
If you have questions about information processed by LORAN or would like to request deletion of information that we can reasonably identify as associated with your use of the service, please contact us using the email address below.
Because LORAN does not currently use an end-user account system, we may need additional information from you to determine whether relevant backend records can be identified.
Children’s privacy
LORAN is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.
If you believe a child has provided personal information through LORAN, please contact us so that we can review the request and take appropriate action.
Security
We use reasonable technical and operational measures designed to protect information processed through LORAN. However, no method of electronic transmission or storage can be guaranteed to be completely secure.
Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy as LORAN changes. When we make changes, we will update the effective date shown at the top of this page.
